About us

Voice of the Postmaster (VOTP) is a unique platform dedicated to postmasters from up and down the country. We aim to provide a space for postmasters to come together, share experiences, and support each other in their important role within the postal service. Our mission is to empower postmasters with valuable resources, foster collaboration, and ultimately contribute to the growth and sustainability of the postal network.

Voice of the Postmaster (VotP) began in early 2022 as a grassroots initiative on a Facebook page for Postmasters, emerging in response to the challenging times following the pandemic. It was clear from discussions across multiple social media platforms that Postmasters were struggling with a lack of support and representation. This led to the idea of forming an independent group to advocate for Postmasters’ rights and concerns.

The group quickly gained momentum, starting with open polls, online discussions, and invitations for Postmasters to share their experiences and views. Over time, the initiative adopted the name "Voice of the Postmaster" and the slogan “Saying No to a Second Post Office Scandal,” reflecting its commitment to accountability and change.

VotP is guided by three core aims:

  1. Fair remuneration: Advocating for proper compensation that reflects the work, responsibilities, and overhead costs borne by Postmasters.

  2. Independent representation: Demanding financial self-sufficiency and democratic representation in all matters affecting Postmasters.

  3. Transparency: Seeking clear and honest communication from Post Office Ltd (POL) about the future of every branch.

Despite holding meetings with POL directors, it became evident that meaningful change was not forthcoming. This realization was underscored during a subsequent Postmaster update led by the CEO, where the proposed solution to pay issues was the distribution of elastic bands—an offer that epitomized the lack of seriousness in addressing Postmaster concerns.

The ongoing Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry continued to expose past failings, further emphasizing the urgent need for reform. Recognizing the necessity of stronger organization, VotP took decisive action by drafting and adopting a formal Constitution. A Committee of active Postmasters was elected, as is the practice at the VotP Annual General Meeting.

When it became clear that POL leadership was unwilling to listen or act, VotP turned its efforts toward the sole shareholder of POL: the UK Government. Meetings were arranged with Ministers, and a series of press releases were issued to draw attention to the pressing issues. The campaign intensified, applying pressure on POL from multiple directions to push for the necessary changes."
